Frequently Asked Questions

What is Reformer Pilates?
Reformer Pilates uses a piece of equipment called a reformer that has a movable carriage which is controlled using weighted springs. Reformer Pilates is particularly effective at training the core as your postural muscles have to contend with balance and your moving limbs on the mobile carriage. We are also able to add and subtract load in your training session. This is different from mat Pilates, as it predominantly uses body weight and less dynamic postures.
What class should I start with?
We would recommend to always start with a Reformer Foundation or Beginners class even if you are quite fit or have done Pilates elsewhere. You may not be used to our style of training and we would recommend being safe and feeling confident on the reformer before progressing to a more challenging class.
What should I wear to a rehab or Pilates session?
Comfortable exercise clothes. Bring a water bottle too - you may get thirsty.
Should I wear socks to reformer Pilates?
Only if they are grip socks. Normal socks are too slippery. Please train barefoot if you do not have grip socks.
Do you teach private 1-1 Pilates sessions?
Yes, however these are charged at Physiotherapy rates and will be significantly more expensive than group classes. Please enquire directly about these.
Can I do reformer Pilates if I am pregnant?
Yes - all your exercises are the same for the first trimester. After that we will need to modify your exercises to match what is happening in your pregnancy. Please let us know as soon as you are comfortable sharing your news that you are pregnant.
Do I have to progress to group rehab or can I do my rehab sessions 1-1 with my physio?
There is no pressure to move into group rehab. It is your journey and if you would prefer to train 1-1 throughout, just let us know and we can easily accomodate that.
Do I need authorisation from a doctor to train if I am pregnant?
No, however as soon as you tell us, we will need to screen you for any pre-cautions or contra-indications to exercise. If there is anything we are concerned about, we will refer you to a doctor/midwife to get consent to participate in our classes.
I do not want to do a pre-exercise screening questionnaire. Can I still train in the studio?
No. For legal reasons we cannot allow anyone to exercise unless we have screened them beforehand.
Can I claim Discovery Vitality points in the reformer studio?
Can I have my studio credits refunded or transfer them to someone else?
No. (Even if your favourite instructor leaves.) We offer generous time frames to use your credits, please be aware of their expiry dates.
Do I need to be a member of the gym to attend Pilates classes?
No. The studio operates separately to the gym. You will however need to sign a separate indemnity form to be in the gym building.
POPIA concerns. What are you going to do with my information?
Your data from your health screening is strictly confidential and we will not share this information with anybody except other staff who may need to know about your health for exercise purposes. Any personal contact information will be used when sending you information about scheduling changes or updates on what is happening in the studio. If you would prefer not to get any communication from the studio, please let us know.
